Prenatal care follows a schedule that changes as your pregnancy progresses, and your provider tracks your health and your baby’s growth at each visit. The timing shifts from monthly appointments early on to more frequent visits later. Knowing what happens during each stage helps you prepare for what comes next. Here are the stages of prenatal care and what to expect:

    First Trimester

The first trimester covers weeks one through 12, and you visit your provider once each month. Your first appointment is typically the longest. During this early stage, your provider confirms the pregnancy and reviews your medical history.

Monthly prenatal care visits let your provider track key baseline measurements. Blood tests screen for conditions, and a physical exam checks your general health. Early testing gives your provider a clear starting point for the months ahead.

At these visits, your provider typically checks:

    • Blood pressure and weight
    • Blood type and iron levels
    • Due date through an ultrasound

Since symptoms like nausea are common now, your provider discusses ways to manage them. You can ask questions, and your provider explains what to expect. This stage sets the foundation for the rest of your care.

    Second Trimester

The second trimester runs from weeks 13 through 28. You continue monthly visits, though appointments become shorter now. Your provider measures your growing belly and listens to the baby’s heartbeat at each visit.

Around week 20, you have an anatomy scan, and this ultrasound examines the baby’s development. Your provider reviews organ growth and position. You may also learn the baby’s sex if you want to know. You might also start to feel the baby’s movements, which can be a major milestone during this trimester.

    Third Trimester

The third trimester spans weeks 29 through birth, and visits increase to twice per month. As your due date approaches, your provider monitors you more closely. These frequent checkups track changes that happen quickly in late pregnancy.

Your provider watches for signs that need attention. Timing matters now, and appointments focus on both your health and the baby’s position. During third-trimester visits, your provider typically checks:

    • Your baby’s position and heartbeat
    • Your blood pressure and swelling
    • Your signs of early labor
    • Any cervical changes or dilation
    • Your weight and overall well-being

When you reach the final weeks, visits may become weekly. Your provider discusses your birth plan, and you review labor signs together. This stage prepares you for delivery day. It’s helpful to stay attentive to your body’s changes during this time, and maintaining open communication with your provider makes sure that any concerns are addressed promptly.

    Find Prenatal Care Near You

Prenatal care changes at each stage, and the visit schedule adjusts as your pregnancy moves forward. Early monthly appointments shift to twice-monthly visits in the third trimester; understanding this timeline helps you plan for each phase of your pregnancy. Starting care early gives your provider more time to track your health. If you are pregnant or planning to be, schedule your first appointment and contact a provider near you today to book your visit.
