The prostate is a small gland located below the bladder in men and AMAB (assigned male at birth) individuals, and it plays a role in producing seminal fluid. Prostate cancer develops when cells in the prostate gland grow abnormally, and to diagnose it, a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam are often necessary. If these tests suggest a concern, a doctor may order imaging or a biopsy to confirm the presence of cancer cells and determine the grade and stage. Here’s more information on prostate cancer treatment options:

    Active Surveillance

Not every case needs immediate prostate cancer treatment. For some men and AMAB individuals with early-stage, slow-growing tumors, doctors may recommend active surveillance. This approach involves regular monitoring through PSA tests, exams, and periodic biopsies to track any changes over time. Active surveillance can help patients avoid the side effects of surgery or radiation when the cancer poses a low risk. Because certain tumors grow so slowly that they may never cause symptoms, close observation allows doctors to intervene only if the cancer begins to progress.

    Robotic Prostatectomy

When treatment becomes necessary, a robotic prostatectomy is one commonly discussed surgical option. During this procedure, a surgeon removes the prostate gland using a minimally invasive robotic-assisted system that translates hand movements into precise instrument motions. For this surgery, the surgeon operates through several small incisions rather than one large opening. The robotic platform offers a magnified, three-dimensional view of the surgical area, which supports greater accuracy during delicate steps.

Many patients have smaller incisions and shorter hospital stays compared to open surgery, though recovery varies from person to person. A surgeon will discuss the potential benefits and risks based on individual health factors. For cancer that has spread beyond the prostate or returned after initial treatment, doctors may recommend more advanced interventions.

    Discussing Advanced Interventions

Advanced treatment options can be used alone or in combination, depending on the stage and characteristics of the disease. Radiation therapy uses high-energy beams or radioactive sources to target and damage cancer cells. External beam radiation directs energy from outside the body, while brachytherapy places radioactive material directly inside or near the prostate.

Chemotherapy uses drugs that travel through the bloodstream to reach cancer cells throughout the body. Doctors often recommend it when the cancer has spread to other areas, and treatment typically follows a scheduled cycle to allow the body time to recover between doses. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in the context of prostate cancer usually refers to hormone therapy that lowers testosterone levels.

Prostate cancer cells often rely on testosterone to grow, so reducing this hormone can slow the progression of the disease. Doctors may deliver hormone therapy through medications or, in some cases, surgical procedures. Each of these interventions carries potential side effects, but your care team will explain what to expect. The right combination depends on factors like:

    • The Cancer’s Stage
    • Your Overall Health
    • Your Personal Preferences

    Get Timely Prostate Cancer Treatment

Early detection and prompt evaluation give you the widest range of treatment options when managing cancer. Prostate cancer varies from person to person, so a treatment plan that works for one individual may not suit another. Speaking with a healthcare provider allows you to review your diagnosis, understand treatment approaches, and make informed decisions. If you have received a diagnosis or have concerns about your prostate health, contact a urology practice near you to schedule a consultation.
